Working on it

"I'm working on it" doesn't have to be an excuse. Here's why embracing being a work in progress is one of the most honest things you can do.

“I’m working on it.”

We say it about the project that’s been sitting on our to-do list for months. The healthy habit we keep meaning to start. The relationship we know needs attention. The dream we haven’t quite found the courage to pursue yet.

And when we say it — or hear it from someone else — there’s often a quiet judgment attached. An unspoken “but are you really though?”

What if we reframed it?

What if “I’m working on it” wasn’t an excuse — but an honest declaration of where we actually are? A acknowledgment that growth is rarely linear, rarely fast, and almost never as clean as we think it should be.

Being a work in progress doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re still in the process. And the process — messy, slow and imperfect as it is — is exactly where all real growth happens.

We don’t arrive at our best selves all at once. We grow there. Gradually. Imperfectly. One small step at a time.

So the next time you catch yourself saying “I’m working on it” — say it without apology. Say it with intention. Because showing up imperfectly is still showing up.

And that’s always enough.
